Friends Meeting of Austin
3701 E Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Austin, Texas 78721
Black Sovereign Nation has partnered with multiple organizations to launch a multi-phase, escalating direct action campaign that combats gentrification in Austin. As a coalition, we are demanding the following from multiple entities, agencies, and associations:
-Minimization of the intrusion of non agricultural developments on land that can be used for agricultural purposes.
— A one-year moratorium on zoning changes and demolition permits for single-family homes across East Austin, including AA Cultural Heritage District.
-Funding of local and grassroots projects that provide affordable housing alternatives.
-A one year moratorium on market rate housing with resurrection contingent upon community benefits agreements, linkage fees, and significant effort towards developing affordable housing in Austin.
-Recently approved and mid-construction market rate developments enter community benefit agreements.
-The adoption of policies that boost minority student populations at the University of Texas to mirror that of local correctional facilities.
-Reintegration of the Liberal Arts and Science Academy and Lyndon Baines Johson High School.
-Reevaluation of LASA admission criteria
-Elimination of law enforcement presence on Austin Independent School District campuses.
-Reinstation of the immigrant coordinator position at Austin Independent School District.
-Financial support issued to families who were pushed out of Austin due to resource inaccessibility.
-Revitilization of East 12th street through economic stimulus issued to Black businesses who agree to embrace a cooperative and profit-sharing model.
Join us on May 22nd to learn about the campaign, prepare for upcoming actions, and develop the skills necessary to create a more equitable Austin.
