It's happening!

The first solar eclipse to cross the entire United States since 1918! Join us at the Historic Golf Shelter to see it safely!

The solar eclipse is a very special event! We will be able to see the moon cover about 75% of the sun from Bastrop State Park. While we are not in the path of totality (the sun won't be totally covered), it'll still be an incredible event that we'll experience together!

Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts: We will be doing some portions of your patch requirements during the program, however, we will not have patches available at the park.

General Public: There will be some solar eclipse viewing glasses available for you to borrow during this event. Supplies are limited.

What:
1. Learn about what a solar eclipse is and how it happens.
2. Discover what ancient people used to think the solar eclipse was before we we able to reliably predict it.
3. Explore how the shadows will change around us as the moon travels across the sun from 11:30am — 2:30pm with pinhole projectors.
4. Observe how animal behavior changes as the sky gets darker in the middle of the day.
5. See the eclipse safely with your own eyes using eclipse glasses and a telescope with a solar filter.

When: 11:30am — 2:30pm. The program will last the entire time. The sun will appear darkest at 1:10pm. Feel free to come and go throughout the program.

Where: Historic Golf Shelter

Bring: sunscreen, sunglasses, water, a hat, solar eclipse viewing glasses if you'd like (https://greatamericaneclipse.com/store/all/), a journal and something to write with. Limited supplies will be provided by the park.

Age Restriction: All ages are welcome but minors MUST be accompanied and watched closely by a parent or guardian. Solar viewing can be extremely safe, but parents are responsible for their children at all times for their safety and the safety of others. Disregarding rules can result in damage to your eyes including blindness. If a Ranger feels that you are a danger to others, you may be asked to leave the program.

Registration: No registration is required.

Cost: This program is free with the cost of admission ($5/person 12 years and older).
