City of San Marcos TX - City Hall
630 E Hopkins St, San Marcos, Texas 78666
After three months of urging City Council to take action against the nation's harshest anti-immigrant law of the Trump era — w/ a dozen clergy members, 50+ «loyal & local» businesses & upwards of 750 petition signatures in support of the cause — a long overdue discussion of SB 4 is scheduled for Tuesday.
Wear white in solidarity w/ one another!
Starting at 4:30PM, we will have pizza in the lobby & posterboard & markers with which to make signs.
Please arrive promptly, as Council begins at 5PM sharp, & we want to have a strong showing when it gavels in…
Also, reach out to Council: several members continue to spread baseless fears that participation in the lawsuit — by either joining litigation, or just filing an amicus brief like a host of religious leaders did last week (including the TX Bishops of the Episcopal, Lutheran & Methodist Churches, alongside Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ & UU state leadership) — will somehow trigger loss of state & federal funding as well as ICE raids.
However, only jurisdictions adopting Sanctuary City policies have been withheld funding & suffered ICE raids; Hays County is literally the opposite of a Sanctuary, w/ Sheriff Cutler explicitly turning over everyone whom ICE requests: even breaking apart families over traffic infractions, as we saw in June with the case of Mr. Martin Guerrero, whom Cutler turned over to ICE after Mr. Guerrero allegedly failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign near his home.
Council need not worry about ICE coming to San Marcos; ICE is already in San Marcos, due to Sheriff Cutler's full compliance w/ all ICE detainers.
Council has yet to offer any shred of proof, whatsoever, that litigants — much less those who simply file amicus briefs — have incurred any consequence for exercising that democratic right to participate in our nation's court system, just as our neighbors San Antonio & Austin — as well as several cities smaller and poorer than us — are already nobly doing.
With nothing short of the Constitution on the line, let's help our Council to take a principled stand, putting San Marcos on the right side of history in these deeply disturbing times!
