#DearTexasLoveTexas For the two weekends of EAST that Justine's is open for special hours, we are doing a Pop-up Activists’ Living Room Photo Booth---this is FREE and VERY OPEN to the public ;) This room is inspired by the grassroots gathering spots of 1970s activists, with a library of books by MLK and Margaret Mead and Black Elk (and more) to leaf through, macramé owls and afghan blankets, and documentaries about people who inspire us on the TV. Guests can hang out with each other, (and kids!), have coffee or drinks, and write messages to their local / state representatives on postcards designed for us by the artist Marilyn Minter and the team at HALT Action Group.

The postcards have RESIST written on one side, and Dear Texas/Love Texas on the message side, and they are meant to personalize communications with leadership. We have a list of addresses for Texas representatives for guests to use, and stamps and a mailbox on site so that the postcards can go out immediately. The DEAR TEXAS / LOVE TEXAS idea came from wanting to use art and community to reach out to our own state, in a grassroots way, with less antagonism than a sincere message.

HALT Action Group is a coalition of artists, curators, writers, psychoanalysts, and activists who have pooled together their creative forces to stage various political actions (like the Dear Ivanka postcard campaign) in New York City. We are cooperating with HALT, collaborating with Marilyn Minter and her team from afar. haltactiongroup.com/

HALT uses the Kingian Nonviolence Principle 2 as part of their agenda: “The Beloved Community is the framework for the future. The nonviolent concept is an overall effort to achieve a reconciled world by raising the level of relationships among people to a height where justice prevails and persons attain their full human potential.”

This Pop-up Activists’ Living Room is an art action of sorts, although we’re not dictating anyone’s message. That’s up to you! We just want to offer a creative and benevolent community space where people can sit with each other, as a complement or refuge from the 'digital loneliness' everyone experiences in this modern age.

Our favorite local photographers will photograph guests writing postcards during segments of the day and again during the evening. We're honored that artist Denise Prince will shoot that first Saturday night, followed by Barbara FG, Ashley Callaghan, Brandon Scott Humphrey (BarBat), DreamIt Photography, Leah B. Flippen and Jason Thompson. The photos will be posted online with the hashtag #DearTexasLoveTexas.

Nov 11 1-4pm: Barbara FG, 7-10pm: Denise Prince
Nov. 12 1-4pm: Ashley Callaghan, 7-10pm: Brandon Humphrey
Nov. 18 1-4pm: Dream It Photography, 7-10pm: Barbara FG
Nov. 19 1-4pm: Leah B. Flippen, 7-10pm: Jason Thompson

We’ll also have a voter registration table open for parts of the weekends.

We can’t wait to see you lovely neighbors so soon… xoxox
